Last night, One Direction made their first public TV appearance since Zayn Malik quit the band and admitted that they were “angry” and “disappointed” when he left. Liam Payne, who had previously said they was “gutted” when they first found out, went into further detail on The Late Late Show with James Corden.

“At first we were a little bit angry obviously, we were surprised,” Liam said. “But I think we all knew the general vibe that Zayn was feeling.”

When the show’s host asked if the guys knew Zayn wasn’t feeling engaged with the group, Liam admitted that they all could tell he wasn’t as into it as he used to be.

“You could sort of tell. And from the outside people could tell. There’s certain parts of this job Zayn loved and there’s certain parts that he didn’t. And if you don’t like your job you’ve gotta follow your heart sometimes and go where you need to go,” Liam said.

“We were angry at first and then it was just more disappointed. We wish him the best of luck with whatever he gets up to. There’s no hard feelings.”

It’s hard to hear just how upset Zayn made the other guys when he left. It’s no wonder Louis Tomlinson’s been going after Naughty Boy on Twitter – he feels betrayed by his brother.

What makes things even worse is that the guys had to deal with Zayn’s departure in the middle of their world tour. Can you imagine feeling that angry and upset and still having to go out on stage like everything’s alright? Of course, Louis did drop some hints during their On The Road Again tour that kind of made it seem like he was struggling.
